The book and CD take you into a place to better understand Patwa (Patios), Jamaican, an English-lexified creole language. The phrases can sometimes be understood because they are similar to English phrases, but other times they are tricky to make outsiders unable to understand quickly what is being said, and that can be used by the speaker as an advantage. I enjoyed the book and the CD, I would purchase from this seller again, as the book arrived promptly and in great condition.Product details

Jamaican Patwa No Problem A Tourist Guide to Jamaican Language and Culture Janice Tisha Samuels 9781935316169 Books Reviews
We had a good time with this book/CD combo. Hearing the spoken pawtwa then the translations really helped us understand folks in Jamaica. We even downloaded it to the mp3 player to listen to while we were there for 2 weeks. I could even understand some of the reggae lyrics better. (When we got back, we gave it to another couple as a honeymoon gift, as they were heading there in a few weeks!)
This is easily one of the most honest and creative ways to have gone about making a vacation guide. Not only are some spots recommended that are out of the average tourists itinerary, beginning conversational patwa is learned through the booklet and audio cd. Adding common dishes native to Jamaica, and you have an all inclusive package that truly readies you to experience Jamaica for all it's worth.
Simply delightful! I've traveled to many countries, purchasing countless language books and travel guides along the way, and this is by far that best I've ever encountered. Patwa No Problem is well thought out and full of amazing linguist and cultural information. It's also extremely easy to use and most of all fun, which makes learning "no problem"! The author truly captured the heart and joyful spirit of Jamaica.
I got this book/audio because i was planning to go to jamaica to visit distant relatives and i am terrible at understanding them being american. I had fun with the CD listening in the car and talking to myself. I even had some friends over one evening, put in on to show them what i had newly acquired and we had a patwa party! we really butchered it but ultimately i am hoping to understand my family better.
Even though on my first trip to Jamaica I had dreadlocks, the second trip I felt more at home with the review of this book, without the dreads and no I am not Jamaican. It was very useful and made my trip more comfortable outside of the resort and even communicating with the employees of the resort. Everyone that is going to Jamaica, without a personal guide of a native, this is the best thing to help you blend in. The imagery is amazing, the base knowledge was simple but exciting. This is a must have.
This is an amazing book, filled with useful information and gorgeous pictures. I am completely satisfied with this purchase and recommend this book to anyone with an interest in this country's food, people, culture, language, and music. Now, if you'll excuse me... I have to book my trip to Jamaica!
We have been to Jamacia years in arrow. This CD is going to help me understand more of what is going on around us. I believe that if one is going to be apart of a culture one should be able to speak it a little bit.
The book and CD take you into a place to better understand Patwa (Patios), Jamaican, an English-lexified creole language.
